Today Apple announced that they are updating their WWDC app. There are three major changes. These are the name, a new WWDC tab, and in-app purchasing. Let us start with the name.
The WWDC app is now known as the Apple Developer app. One can This app's name is definitely more befitting given the next feature, the WWDC tab.
The WWDC tab is a new tab that encompasses what was previously the entire WWDC app. This includes WWDC schedules, your favorites, lab schedules, and WWDC sessions.
The last new feature is the ability to enroll in the Apple developer from right within the app. This is done using an auto-renewing subscription within the app. Initially, the subscription feature is only available within the United States, but will be rolling out to more countries over time. Apple does have a step-by-step tutorial on how to enroll using the app.
if you already have an account you can log in. The ability to be able to enroll in an Apple Developer account will make it much simpler for developers to be able to enroll in the Apple developer program, without needing to go through the Apple developer site.
Hopefully, this is only the start to new features being added to the Developer app.
A millennial is defined as someone who is born between 1981 and 1996. I am a millennial, albeit an early one. If you ask someone to provide one thing that would define a "millennial" it is possible that they will respond with something like "they are constantly jumping from job to job". If you were to look the resume for what one might call a "typical millennial", you would likely see them jumping from job to job typically every two or three years. In this respect I am not a typical millennial.
I got my first job when I was 16 and I stayed with that employer for almost 17 years. This clearly is not typical behavior of a millennial. During my tenure there I did just have a single position, I had four of them. I wrote up a whole post about it when I did change jobs.
During my tenure with my second employer I have managed to automate a number of things so they no longer require direct staff intervention, which has freed up staff time to handle other projects. Along with this, I have created many internal applications that have allowed for more streamlined workflows. Friday was my last day with my second employer.
I was not planning on leaving my second employer, but sometimes the right job comes around at the right time; this is one of those cases. I think my second employer is in a much better position than they were before I started three and half years ago.
Tomorrow I start a new job with my third employer. Similar to my last two jobs, this one is is still related to libraries. I will be doing many of the same things as my previous job, but there is one big addition. I will be working on an iOS app. It will not be a public app, as it will be for internal use. The idea of doing an iOS app was one of the big factors in taking the position.
This new job will be a new adventure for me. While it does have with a bit more of a daily commute, each job has tradeoffs. It is the next logical step in my career. Having been a web developer for my day job, as well as doing an iOS app on the side, I am excited to be able to work on an iOS app for my day job.

Yesterday Apple unveiled a replacement for the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro, the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 16-inch MacBook Pro takes form factor of the 15.4-inch model and enhances it. The 16-inch MacBook Pro still comes with a Touch Bar.
There is a change that cannot be expressed in words. To quote from Apple's press release,
The 16-inch MacBook Pro introduces a completely redesigned six-speaker, high-fidelity sound system designed to bring musicians, podcasters and video editors the most advanced audio experience ever in a notebook. New Apple-patented force-canceling woofers use dual opposed speaker drivers to reduce unwanted vibrations that distort sound. As a result, music sounds more clear and natural than ever before, and the bass can go half an octave deeper. An upgraded high-performance mic array delivers a 40 percent reduction in hiss and an improved signal-to-noise ratio that rivals that of popular professional-grade digital microphones, delivering super-clean recordings that capture even the quietest details.
One of the biggest, and most needed, changes is the keyboard. The old style keyboard which was introduced in 2016 has been replaced with a Magic Keyboard. The mechanism that you type on was previously a butterfly switches. This has been replaced with the traditional scissor switches. This change should reduce the overall issues that have affected the keyboards, but only time will be able to tell if that is really the case.
The keyboard has two additional features that many users have been asking for. The first is a physical escape key. Many developers will be glad to see this key return, as they are constantly using it. The second keyboard feature that many users have wanted is the "inverted t" arrangement for the arrow keys. The return of inverted-t arrangement will allow users to easily identify which key they are pressing.
One thing that has changed, but may be more of a subtle change is the new screen. The screen is larger than the previous model and has a P3 Color Gamut, still 500 nits of brightness, but it does have a resolution of 3072 by 1920. The screen will also now support a wider range of refresh rates. The supported rates are 47.95Hz, 48.00Hz, 50.00Hz, 59.94Hz, and 60.00Hz.
There are two models of 16-inch MacBook Pro. The first comes with a 2.6GHz 6‑core Intel Core i7 processor and the AMD Radeon 5300M graphics card, 512GB of SSD storage. The second model comes with a 2.3GHz 8-core Intel Core i9 processor and the AMD Radeon 5500M graphics card with 4GB of memory and 1TB of storage.
These are configurable to a 2.4GHz 8-core Intel Core i9 processor and an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with either 4GB or 8GB of memory. The possibilities for upgrading the storage have increased as well. You now have the options of a1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB SSD.
There have been some reviews of the new 16-inch MacBook Pro. Most notably from Marco Arment, John Gruber, and Rene Ritchie. There is one last thing, Jonathan Morrison was able to sit down with Apple's Senior Vice President of Marketing, Phil Schiller to discuss the MacBook Pro.
As mentioned earlier, the 16-inch MacBook Pro model replaces the 15.4-inch model. The new line-up consists of the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is available for order today starting at $2399. The second model starts at $2799.
It is good to see Apple providing the features that their professional users want in devices. Hopefully, this is just the first step in making their laptops even better.
I am not sure if I will end up getting one at some point or not. My early-2015 MacBook Pro is still working, but is limited in terms of storage space, time will tell. If I do end up getting one, I will be sure to review it.
Today Apple announced an additional option for in-ear headphones, the AirPods Pro. The AirPods Pro add a new feature that is not available on standard AirPods. That feature is Active Noise Cancellation
The AirPods Pro is able to achieve Active Noise Cancellation through two microphones on each AirPod. The microphone in the front will listen for external noises and create a sound that will cancel out the external sounds. The internal microphone will perform the same on any noise coming from the inside of the ear. This process is done 200 times per second, which should make any audio sound pretty good.
In order to produce the best noise cancellation for you, the AirPods come with different tips that will allow you to get the best fit specifically for your ears. When you perform the setup an algorithm will be able to see which tips will not only fit the best, but also provide the best noise cancellation.
There are times when you need to be able to hear the things around you. For these times there is "Transparency Mode". Transparency mode will reduce the amount of noise cancellation so you can hear the environment around you. This is accomplished by tapping on the "sensor" on the AirPod to switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode.
Apple states that the AirPods Pro will last for 4.5 hours on a single charge, 5 hours if you turn off Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode. When you need to charge you can use the AirPods case, which is the Wireless Charging Case, so you can charge them with any Qi-compatible charger.
The AirPods Pro are run by the H1 chipset and are capable of Audio Sharing, using "Hey Siri", and announcing any messages.
AirPods Pro will require iOS 13.2, watchOS 6.1, or macOS Catalina 15.1 and are available to order today and will begin arriving on October 30th. If you do decide to order a pair they will cost $249, including the wireless charging case.
